Moiseyev Dance Company Review

On January 23rd, mostly everyone from Ice Dance Elite went to the Sony Centre to see the Moiseyev Dance Company perform their "one night only" show dedicated to founder of the dance company Igor Moiseyev, who recently passed away at the age of 101. This folk ballet consisted of many different dances such as Russian, Greek, Egyptian, Romanian, etc.

Most of us had met up at Scarborough Centennial Recreation Center and took the "party bus" down to the Sony Centre and I know I can say that it was by far, the coolest school bus I’ve ever travelled in. The bus was dark inside and had strobe lights set up. Not only did the strobe lights make the bus so cool, but there were smoke machines set up on both sides of the bus. So at one point, with the touch of a button, the bus driver puts on the smoke machines. AWESOME!! The bus ride had definitely set up the mood to watch the ballet.

Going into the ballet I had not expected it to be as good as it actually was. Well for better words the ballet was not "good" but it was "spectacular". The dancing throughout the entire show was unbelievable! The women were so soft on their feet it was as if they were flying or floating on a cloud and the men showed amazing physical strength and fitness. This was the perfect contrast to really show off the different talent displayed throughout the show. The women and men were also diverse dancers because they could do pure ballet, folk dances, and ballroom.

Our seats were fairly high and I think we were about 10 rows from the back of the theatre but they were most definitely the best seats in the house. This was because we not only got to see all the dancers, but we definitely got to appreciate the choreography that no one on the lower floors would have even seen. A lot of the choreography had different transitions that changed so smoothly and so intricate. There were parts where the dancers would be lines in lines rotating women and men and then instantly you are watching them dance and they ended up in a circle. The choreography was unbelievable and there must be credit for the brilliance behind it!

The costumes were throughout the show weren’t anything to jump at but you could hardly notice their simplicity due to the fact that the dancing and choreography was mesmerizing. Basically all the numbers were awesome but there were several that were actually amazing. For instance, the opening number was spectacular in the sense that everything they did seemed to flow so smoothly and some of the movements they did left you turning to your neighbour and saying: "Did that just happen?" First impressions are extremely important and this was even shown in the ballet. They had a strong opening number and it left you excited and anxious to watch for more. It wasn’t just in this first number that there were shocking reactions. Probably the number that everyone would remember would be the "Sailor Number" which was the last number of the show. Not only did this number leave mouths open, but they repeated a certain section of it several times. Every time they repeated it my mouth would just fall with shock. Not only were their movements interesting, but the choreography was absolutely stunning. Basically, it is very hard to express the impressive details that were danced. There were also some numbers that were visually confusing due to the complex transitions but with the dancers doing moves that left you astounded it made you wonder if what they were doing was physically possible. In the words of Graham: "It was coffee for the eyes!" (That was definitely a phrase created by Graham!) This show was unbelievable and something that we will never forget!
