After many hours traveling by plane and bus, as well as a day of sight seeing in Barcelona, we finally arrived in Canillo, Andorra. It was a small town, in which the rink seemed to occupy about half the space! The town was surrounded by beautiful mountains. But we couldn't complain! The arena was a minute's walk from the hotel, the food was superb (best we ever tasted at any meal!) the weather was great, and the view from the mountains was amazing. The adults couldn't complain either, they could have all the wine they wanted for about 5 Euros a bottle!
It was a great competition experience. We were able to see great junior skaters from around the world and compete against them. We placed a very respectable 7th place in our first event on the international scene. We skated a good Austrian Waltz and were very happy with our 7th position. In the OD we placed 5th skating very well. In that segment, we got the third highest technical score. However, we had an unfortunate fall in the FD, pulling us back into 7th. All in all it was a great experience, and we were happy to participate.
We also enjoyed other aspects of our trip. We were able to meet tons of new people from around the world. In fact, we tried to communicate with anyone who looked like they might have a few words of English! We also had the chance to meet Sally, Carol's sister, and her husband "Flat" Eric, who came out from England to cheer us on. There also proved to be some free time. We explored the town, and went up the mountain in a gondola (cable car). We had a fantastic view of the town, Vanessa took the opportunity to chase sheep, and we did our "Sound of Music Impression." On the last day, we climbed the mountain on foot with some of our Canadian team mates. It was so much fun!
Considering everything, it was a great experience. We had the time of our lives. If Skate Canada will invite us to another Junior Grand prix, we will certainly say "Yes!"
