On Saturday April 15, skaters, coaches and family from the Ice Dance Elite program went to the 2006 Canadian Closed Amateur Dance Sport Championships at the Double Tree International Plaza Hotel. This was a highly enjoyable evening that gave us the opportunity to see the origins of our dances and to better understand the look that goes with them.
This was a very well organized competition that flowed from one event to the next smoothly with the down time created by the needed tabulations filled up with announcement and general dances, a time where the spectators and volunteers are invited to try their hands on the dance floor. The only real problem with the event was that of a very poor set up with their sound system that made it very difficult to understand what the announcer was saying. This made it complicated to know what level it was that you where watching unless you had bought a program or were seating near someone who had.
As with any well organized competition, this one followed the rule of thumbs that the higher the level the later you place it. This had the unfortunate consequence that the younger skaters, and their families, missed some of the best events and that most skaters missed the last two finals which were, of course, the best.
