When Jon began to sharpen skates, his mission was that every skater from beginner to Olympic champion should be able to skate on world class edges. Over the years he has honed his technique as well as your edges to put you all on the cutting edge of success.
This year, Ice Dance Elite has had its most successful national and international season ever, in no small part due to excellent skate sharpening our teams get from Jon. Vanessa Crone, Paul Poirier, Asher Hill, Kharis Ralph, Olivia Martins, Marc-Andre Servant, Joanna Salvagna, Katie Desveaux, Dmitre Razgulajevs (and Juris too!) Nikki Yorgiadis, Mackenzie Bent and Garrett Mackeen are just some of the national champions and competitors who skate on Jon's sharpenings, as well as many other members of Scarboro F.S.C. and skaters from all over the city.
Here's a little taste of Jon's technique!
"The most important aspect of a good skate sharpening is the edge or bite angle interface with the ice surface. It is of paramount importance that time is taken to set up these parameters before the grind wheel is set in motion. Once this has been done, every care must be taken to ensure that the edges are level. The best way to set up any kind of success for all kinds of skating, be it free skating dancing or hockey is from 2 perfectly level edges. This is the magic neutral or "0" point. From this point you can work on building success. It only takes a slight 1 or 2 degree discrepancy in the edges to cause far reaching problems and hamper your progress. It is my personal goal to give you the best edges possible so that you can achieve yours."
